Success in Math

 General Math Success
  1.  Ask questions in class! There are usually other students wanting to know the answers to the same questions you have.
  2. Studying for Math is different from studying for other subjects. Math is learned by DOING problems. DO THE HOMEWORK! Just as you do not learn to swim by watching others swim, you will not truly learn Math by watching me or anyone else do problems. In order to learn, you must work the problems for yourself.
  3. A word of warning: Each Math class builds on the previous ones, all year long. You must keep up with the work. Falling a day behind puts you at a disadvantage. Falling a week behind puts you in deep trouble.
  4. A word of encouragement: Every math topic build on previous concepts as well, all year long. Because of this, you are always reviewing previous material as you learn new material. Many of the ideas work together.
 Math Study Tips
  1. Contrary to popular belief, you CAN and SHOULD study for Math tests.
  2. Do the homework when it is assigned. You cannot hope to cram 2 or 3 weeks worth of learning into a couple of days of study.
  3. Study with a PENCIL! On tests you have to solve problems; homework problems are the only way to get practice. Before the test, REWORK old homework problems. Download the solutions but cover them up and try to get the answers on your own. After you have worked the problem, check your solution against mine.
  4. Reading over the textbook or your notes can be helpful, but it is NOT the most effective way to study for Math tests. Downloading the study guides will benefit you by helping you to focus on what is important, but remember to study by DOING problems.
  5. There should be no surprises on a Math test. If you came up with the correct answers to the problems when studying, chances are you will come up with the correct answers on the test. On the other hand, if you are getting problems wrong when studying, make sure you correct the problem before test time.
  6. Relax! It is only a test. Practice effective study habits before the test and do your best. It's all that anyone can ask of you.
