Class Summary: October 28, 2013

Compound Inequalities is the topic for today. Not the simplest topic we have covered, so if you need to practice (and we all do), download today's classwork here. The more problems you practice, the easier they become.

Tuesday's Teaser: Proportions

...few will enter, fewer will win.

Remember, all correct answers emailed to me before Monday will earn 10 extra bonus points. (Sorry, no more new cars to give away) Here's the teaser:

You are downloading your new favorite movie, Dora's Ballet Adventure (Movie trailer can be found here,  the Sticker, Coloring, and Activity Book  here). After 11 minutes, you have downloaded 32mb. The whole movie is 704 mb. At this rate, how long will it take to download the entire movie (round to the nearest minute). That's it. Solve it, & win big.

GradeCam Site Down

Been trying to scan the tests from Friday. The site has been down for maintenance.  I'll keep trying and post the grades as soon as possible.

Class Summary: October 21, 2013

Inequalities is the topic for today. We will look at the similarities and differences between equations and inequalities.  This will be our topic for the next two weeks or so.  It's important that you get off to a good start by really understanding the information and concepts covered today. Our class work is here.

Tuesday's (Too Easy) Teaser

Make 'em harder they kept saying.  Alright, starting next week. In keeping with our literal equation theme of late, today's teaser requires those same skills. Email showing the equation solved for the proper variable in addition to the correct answer before Friday to get the 10 extra credit points.

 Next week, promise.

Find the length of a field that is 50 yards wide and has a perimeter of 220 yards.

Class Summary: October 16, 2013

Hope everyone enjoyed their extended weekend. We're back at it, and today we get serious about literal and other equations. You're going to be solving some advanced equations today in preparation for tomorrow's test on the same concepts.  Our class work is here.  If you can solve these without difficulty, the test should be much less of a challenge..

Class Summary: October 11, 2013

Due to the shortened periods today, our class work consisted of our warm up questions. View the slideshow for more practice with literal and rational equations, and other algebra fun.

Class Summary: October 9, 2013

Our focus today is on literal equations. Please check the slideshow if there is any confusion on your part.  The class work introduced various types of problems and formulas. The work can be found here.

Class Summary: October 8, 2013

Today is |Absolute Value| test day.  Prior to the test, we will review literal equations (solving for a specific variable). No class work today due to the test.

Tuesday's Teaser

It's that time of the week for your shot at an additional 10 extra credit points.  Email the correct answer before Friday.  Here goes:

Name three consecutive numbers whose sum is twice that of the smallest number.

The numbers must be in order, from the smallest to the largest.

Good Luck!

Yes, you have until Tuesday, October 15 to complete this week's Khan Academy.  Take advantage of the extra days and enjoy the break.  Here they are:

* Solving Rational Equations 1

* Solving Equations in Terms of a Variable

* Linear Equation Word Problems

Mid-Term Test; Part I Results

Get your scores here. Overall, they were quite a bit better.  Lot's of 100% papers, which was great to see.

Don't forget, part II of the mid term is Monday. Khan Academy due by 7:00 pm tonight.

Tuesday's Teaser Solution

Like much of algebra, the difficulty comes not from the math, but from understanding what is actually being asked, and then using the correct methods to solve the probem. We just take the total length (3/4 of a yard) and divide by the length of each piece (1/8).

Class Summary: October 1, 2013

It's all about Absolute Value today; Simplifying expressions and solving equations. This will be part II of our Mid Term Exam, so if you haven't done so already, please download the class work and solve either the odd or even problems.

Class Summary: September 30, 2013

Today we focus on preparing for our mid term exam. The handout for our class work is found here.

Tuesday's Teaser

Your weekly opportunity for extra credit points. All who email correctly before Friday receive 10 additional grade points.  Good Luck!!

Absolute Value Tutorial

If you would like some extra help understanding Absolute Value Equations, this is a great presentation on the subject.  It includes practice problems and the answers so you can check your understanding.

Well worth the 5 minutes it takes to view the presentation.  Especially before our next test.

Success in Math

 General Math Success
  1.  Ask questions in class! There are usually other students wanting to know the answers to the same questions you have.
  2. Studying for Math is different from studying for other subjects. Math is learned by DOING problems. DO THE HOMEWORK! Just as you do not learn to swim by watching others swim, you will not truly learn Math by watching me or anyone else do problems. In order to learn, you must work the problems for yourself.
  3. A word of warning: Each Math class builds on the previous ones, all year long. You must keep up with the work. Falling a day behind puts you at a disadvantage. Falling a week behind puts you in deep trouble.
  4. A word of encouragement: Every math topic build on previous concepts as well, all year long. Because of this, you are always reviewing previous material as you learn new material. Many of the ideas work together.
 Math Study Tips
  1. Contrary to popular belief, you CAN and SHOULD study for Math tests.
  2. Do the homework when it is assigned. You cannot hope to cram 2 or 3 weeks worth of learning into a couple of days of study.
  3. Study with a PENCIL! On tests you have to solve problems; homework problems are the only way to get practice. Before the test, REWORK old homework problems. Download the solutions but cover them up and try to get the answers on your own. After you have worked the problem, check your solution against mine.
  4. Reading over the textbook or your notes can be helpful, but it is NOT the most effective way to study for Math tests. Downloading the study guides will benefit you by helping you to focus on what is important, but remember to study by DOING problems.
  5. There should be no surprises on a Math test. If you came up with the correct answers to the problems when studying, chances are you will come up with the correct answers on the test. On the other hand, if you are getting problems wrong when studying, make sure you correct the problem before test time.
  6. Relax! It is only a test. Practice effective study habits before the test and do your best. It's all that anyone can ask of you.

Class Summary: September 27

Once again we focused on absolute value expressions and equations. Today's class work can be viewed or downloaded here.

Class Summary: September 26

An Introduction to absolute value expressions and equations was our focus today.  We also practiced the four operations with Integers and worked a bit with rational numbers.
