Please check the slideshow for updates, announcements, and some helpful reviews and tips.

Khan Academy due Sunday, as usual.

Test on Tuesday.

Solving Equation Tuorial; PowerPoint Viewer

If you are having difficulty with any of the equations we have been working on, this tutorial is here to help you. It takes you step-by-step through many different types of equations.  You can look through them all, or skip to the section you need to work on.

You can download the presentation and view it with PowerPoint.  If you do not have PowerPoint on your computer, you can download a free program, PowerPoint Viewer which allows you to view, but not change any slideshows. Since you are not creating a slideshow, this is perfect for viewing the presentations.

Tuesday's Teaser

Every Tuesday, I will be posting a question (usually, but not always, involving math). The first five people to email me the correct answer receive 10 extra credit points. Here's this week's teaser:

Good Luck, remember to email your answers.

Class Summary: September 11, 2013

Our focus today is on equations.  Equations form the foundation of algebra, and will be used throughout the year.  Please make sure you understand the rules for solving equations.  There are only a few, and they are not difficult.  Review the slideshow if you need more help.

Reminder: Test tomorrow on simplifying, translating, and solving simple equations.

Class Summary: September 9, 2013

Lot's going on today as we begin our first full week of school. If you were absent or need to review the concepts covered today, please go through the slideshow below.

This week we will take a more detailed look at order of operations, various types of equations, and how they are used in real life situations.  We also have a test on Wednesday, and your first Khan Academy mastery topics are due before next Sunday.  Be committed to doing the best you can and always ask if you are unsure.  Finally, the class work for today can be found here.

.... Khan Academy Schedule for September

Schedule of September’s Mastery Practice Deadlines & Grading Procedures

Since the Khan Academy Mastery Practice determines 20% of your grade, it is important that you understand the test deadlines and how your grades are calculated.

Below you will find a weekly list of topics to be completed before 7:00 pm on the date given.  All deadlines are on Sunday evenings. Your grades will be determined as follows:

A:  Mastery achieved before deadline:  100% grade for that topic.

B:  Mastery not achieved by deadline:  Because the more you practice anything, the better you will become, you will receive 3 points for each question you answer, correct or not. Your maximum grade (if you answer 30 or more questions) will be 90%.  If you were to answer 35 questions but not answer 5 in a row correctly, you will receive a grade of 90%.  If you attempt to answer no questions, your grade will be 0%.  If you do 10 problems and get 9 correct, your score will be 27%.

C:  Mastery must be achieved by the deadline, not after. You will always know the assigned topics at least a week in advance, giving you sufficient time to achieve mastery.

Here is the list of Tests and their Deadlines for the Month of September:
       September 15, 2013—7:00 pm
  Writing Expressions 1

Class Summary: September 6, 2013

The first week of school is complete, and we've made quite a bit of progress.  Check the slideshow below for complete coverage of our classroom activities.

A couple of reminders: Your notebook is due by Monday.  This is the one you will be using for the remainder of the year. Divide it into three sections as discussed in class.  Also, be sure to get a g-mail account with at least your first and last name so I know whose account it is. After doing that, go to Khan Academy, register, and add me as a coach.

Here is the link to today's classwork.  Enjoy your weekend.

Class Summary: September 5, 2013

Once again, we looked at a section of the course syllabus in greater detail.  Today, we focused on registration and navigation of the Khan Academy site. As this portion represents 20% of your class grade, it is important that you get registered as soon as possible, and that you become familiar with the various aspects of the site.  The step-by-step registration process is shown below.

Remember, before you register, you must first obtain a G-mail address.

For our class work today, we focused on expressions and equations, which is found on page 2.

.

Class Summary: September 4, 2013

Today we took a more detailed look at parts of the syllabus, discussed the use and purpose of variables, went through some practice problems together, and completed the assigned class work.

.

Welcome Back!

I hope you had a great summer and are ready for further academic progress.  I can assure you that your success in Algebra will have nothing to do with math and everything to do with your commitment, effort, and motivation.

Sept. 3 2013

As I mentioned in class, all of the work we do in class, including the handouts, is available on this site. You can download all of the presentations and documents.  Additionally, I will be providing links to various sites which you can use to better understand a particular concept, or help you study for a test.

Today, we discussed the syllabus, which you can find here, and you wrote (and drew) some things to help me get to know you better. Remember, you can always email me at the address shown on the right side of this blog if you have questions.

Khan Academy Topics for April 14

As usual, Khan Academy topics are due by 7:00 Sunday evening.  Correctly answering eight or more consecutive questions is considered mastery and a score of 100%.  You still earn 4 points for each correct question, even without mastery.  The more questions you answer correctly, the higher your percentage.  Here are this week's topics:

Solving Quadratics by Taking the Square Root

**Graphing Parabolas in Standard Form

** This topic was assigned before spring break. However, very few people received a score other than zero.  A second opportunity awaits you.
