Tuesday's Teaser; Christmas Edition
*As
Santa prepared to deliver the last of his packages down under in
Sydney, Australia, he noticed two small boxes at the bottom addressed
to: "Bambino, Rome Italy". Realizing that the boxes had been misplaced
and that he only had 4 hours before the Bambino would wake up, Santa
strapped a pair of Nike Air Max Hyper Aggressor's on each reindeer and
sped towards Rome. Exactly 4 hrs. later, Santa delivered the boxes and
headed home to Mrs. C.
Find the distance (in miles, rounded to the nearest hundred) between Sydney and Rome, then calculate Santa's average speed during his trip. Round Santa's speed to the nearest whole number.
First five correct emails share 50 extra credit points. One correct answer gets them all, two correct get 25 points each, etc....

Weekend Super Bonus Teaser!
Alright, so it's not really a teaser this week. It's more like the bully down the block taunting you with cries of "Ha Ha, you can't solve me"
But, I think you can. You are not going to do anything different from what we've been practicing in class. Give yourself lots of scratchpaper space, keep your head about you, and take it one step at a time.
Correct solutions, emailed before Monday, will receive 10 bonus points. But wait, there's more! For this weekend only, we'll double the bonus points. That's right, you get 20 bonus points, a spot on the new v6math teaser hall of fame page, and my upmost respect.*
*Only one entry per person. (Make it count). Correct answer cannot be divulged until contest ends.

1st Quarter Final Exam Review
We'll be having our final exam on Thursday, November 7. The test will focus on equations and inequalities. If you can solve these, then you know the order of operations, can work with positive and negative numbers and fractions. As a result, there won't be any questions specifically on these topics.
You can download the review here without the solutions, or with solutions provided if you'd like to get started early.

Like much of algebra, the difficulty comes not from the math, but from understanding what is actually being asked, and then using the correct methods to solve the probem. We just take the total length (3/4 of a yard) and divide by the length of each piece (1/8).

Success in Math
General Math Success
- Ask questions in class! There are usually other students wanting to know the answers to the same questions you have.
- Studying for Math is different from studying for other subjects. Math is learned by DOING problems. DO THE HOMEWORK! Just as you do not learn to swim by watching others swim, you will not truly learn Math by watching me or anyone else do problems. In order to learn, you must work the problems for yourself.
- A word of warning: Each Math class builds on the previous ones, all year long. You must keep up with the work. Falling a day behind puts you at a disadvantage. Falling a week behind puts you in deep trouble.
- A word of encouragement: Every math topic build on previous concepts as well, all year long. Because of this, you are always reviewing previous material as you learn new material. Many of the ideas work together.
- Contrary to popular belief, you CAN and SHOULD study for Math tests.
- Do the homework when it is assigned. You cannot hope to cram 2 or 3 weeks worth of learning into a couple of days of study.
- Study with a PENCIL! On tests you have to solve problems; homework problems are the only way to get practice. Before the test, REWORK old homework problems. Download the solutions but cover them up and try to get the answers on your own. After you have worked the problem, check your solution against mine.
- Reading over the textbook or your notes can be helpful, but it is NOT the most effective way to study for Math tests. Downloading the study guides will benefit you by helping you to focus on what is important, but remember to study by DOING problems.
- There should be no surprises on a Math test. If you came up with the correct answers to the problems when studying, chances are you will come up with the correct answers on the test. On the other hand, if you are getting problems wrong when studying, make sure you correct the problem before test time.
- Relax! It is only a test. Practice effective study habits before the test and do your best. It's all that anyone can ask of you.

Today we are focusing on equations with fractions. Equations with one fraction are solved a bit differently than fractions with two or more fractions. We will cover both methods for solving and look at some of the more complex equations before tomorrow's test.
Our class work has only 8 problems, but they each take some time to work through. Remember, the test is on Tuesday, so it will benefit you to do all the practice problems and ask if you are unsure of anything. The class work can be found here.
